Why Choose Natural Products?

As a parent, it’s very likely that you try to avoid unnecessarily exposing your tweens and teens to artificial ingredients in food. You can do the same with personal care products!

There are many options, some better than others, and it’s important to understand what they are and what goes into them before you decide.

The best products for boys are those made with naturally derived ingredients. You should be able to read and recognize the ingredients on the label instead of seeing a list of unfamiliar, potentially harmful chemicals. This will help you know you’ve selected the best and safest product for boys with sensitive skin.

What to Look For

When choosing a good first deodorant for your kids, look for deodorants and antiperspirants that are:

  • Aluminum Free: Most often found in antiperspirants, aluminum is the ingredient that yellows the underarms of white shirts. Aluminum stays in the body and accumulates over time. It is thought to interfere with hormones and increase the odor-causing bacteria on your skin, leading to more pungent-smelling sweat.
  • Paraben Free: Parabens are artificial preservatives that can be absorbed through the skin and have been linked to cancer. They are thought to interfere with the way the body produces and regulates hormones and are suspected to be endocrine system disruptors.
  • Propylene Glycol Free: This substance was originally developed as an anti-freeze. It is often used in antiperspirants and deodorants as a moisturizing agent and to improve absorption. It has been shown to be a skin irritant and to cause allergic reactions, even in tiny concentrations.
  • Sulfate Free: Sulfates, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES, are powerful detergents made of sulfur-containing mineral salts. Sulfates derived from petroleum are controversial because petroleum products are associated with climate change, pollution, and greenhouse gases. SLS and SLES can irritate the skin, especially with long-term use.
  • Phthalate Free: Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds that are used primarily to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl, supple and flexible. They are one of the most commonly used plasticizers in the world. Shown to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems in animal studies, phthalates can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled.
